The Union of European Football Associations confirmed the last pots that were used to determine the group allocations. These teams are going to compete for the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship trophy.
The final pots were drawn, and they showed that Russia is in the same group as Belgium and Denmark. The Russian and Danish national teams were put into group B and they are tournament hosts as well. The final tournament draw pots were determined in accordance with how the team ranks after the qualifying tournament.
Belgium was drawn into pot 1 because they won all of their qualifying matches. Other national teams in this group are Italy, England, Spain, Ukraine, and Germany. Italy, Spain, England, and Germany are hosting cities too.
Russia and Ukraine will not be drawn into the same group. Belgium was automatically drawn into Group B. The other teams that are in pot 2 include France, Poland, Switzerland, Croatia, and the Netherlands.
Pot 3 includes Denmark, Portugal, Turkey, Austria, Sweden, and Czech Republic. Pot 4 is composed of Wales, Finland, and four of the remaining teams that failed to succeed immediately. The only teams that can join group B are from pot 4.
During the group stage, the draw ceremony was on November 30. This draw was in Bucharest.
The top two teams from each group are going to the finals and will be joined by the four play- off path winners. The teams are split into six groups of four.
The UEFA Euro 2020 is going to be in 12 different cities. The reason behind this is for the 60th anniversary of the European Championship. Euro 2020 is from June 12 through July 12.
Russia’s St. Petersburg will be the host of three group stage games and also a quarterfinal. Those games are slated to be in London, Munich, Baku, Rome, Bucharest, Dublin, Copenhagen, Bilbao, Glasgow, Budapest, and Amsterdam.
The draw us not like any other draws in the past. This draw was four months before the last four teams were determined in the playoff rounds. Seven of the twelve nations are already determined to groups and they were given homes games.
It is very interesting that Belgium, being a top-ranked team is not a host nation. The Ukraine is in pot 1 could not be put in the same group with Russia. This is for many security reasons.
The playoffs include four host nations which are Hungary, Ireland, Romania, and Scotland. If they advance, they will get home games. Kosovo also cannot be in the same group as Russia for security reasons, so, the winner of that bracket cannot be in group B.
